How do I help my child select the right college?

Content provided by Guided Path and Get Knowledge for College

Choosing a college can be a difficult and time-consuming task. There is no “one right university.” Every school is different. Students have to find the right school where they feel comfortable and can succeed.

Your child should have already be exploring colleges. It’s time to start narrowing down the choices and compile a college list. Here are five categories to consider when evaluating a college:

  • General Information - Where is it located? Is it public or private? How many students go to school there?

  • Academic - What majors are offered?  Does the school offer the academic program you are interested in?  Undecided about your major - how will the school help you choose a program of study?  What other special academic programs does the school offer - honors, academic themed housing, study abroad, etc.?

  • Admissions - Check out the acceptance rate. How hard is it to get into? What are the average ACT or SAT scores of admitted students? What about the average GPA of admitted students? Is it a weighted or unweighted GPA?

  • Financial Aid- What is the average merit award? What is the percent of need met? Average financial aid size? Cost of attendance?

  • Social Experience- Explore the college style.  How many freshmen live on campus? What is the social life like? What are some of the main events on campus?

Take Action

Talk to your child about what they want to major in and what they want to do with the rest of their lives. It’s time to get started and write down a list of potential schools. Then sit down and compare the colleges and figure out which one is the right fit for your child and family.
